What are the « Hard Seltzer », these american alcoholic drinks that are trying to conquer the french palate ?

Created in 2013, #hardseltzer are a mix of sparkling water, fermanted sugar and alcool.

According to The International Wine and Spirit Research (IWSR), these beverages represent already 2.6% of the alcoholic drinks market in the United States, and there sales have tripled between 2013 and 2019.

Soft, low-calorie, low-sugar, they are an alternative to beer and wine and follows the consumption trends of new generations in search of “healthier” products.

Despite the growing interest for this product within the french market, producers biggest concern is to adapt the taste o to the very specific french palate. For instance, to create Fefe (a french brand of alcoholic drink) mixologists seeked the help of perfume and aroma expert Jean Niel, located in Grasse.

Even though the pandemic is slowing down their growth at the moment, these « Hard Seltzer » should be the new trend next summer, according to Hadrien Moudoulaud, chief mixologist in the Syndicat des Alcools Français.
